Photography challenges smash through the walls of routine and monotony. They nudge you to explore uncharted territories and stretch your creative muscles. With each challenge, you’ll learn new tricks of the trade. Whether it’s capturing the perfect silhouette or freezing a split-second of motion, these challenges are like secret scrolls of photography wisdom. These challenges are like a lightning bolt of inspiration, zapping you with fresh ideas and innovative approaches. They’ll make you see the world through a different lens (literally!), unearthing beauty and intrigue in the most unexpected places. Suddenly, that dusty corner of your room becomes a treasure trove of photographic gold!

Challenge 1: “Colorful Creations”

Ah, the world of vibrant hues and chromatic wonders! In this challenge, we dive headfirst into the realm of capturing eye-popping, jaw-dropping colors in all their glory. Get ready to channel your inner color enthusiast and create visually stunning masterpieces that would make a chameleon blush.

The Challenge: Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and I highly recommend you do), is to capture photographs that showcase a specific color or a harmonious combination of colors. The goal here is to create images that practically leap off the screen or canvas, mesmerizing viewers with their chromatic brilliance.

Essential Tips

  • Get up close and personal: Capture the intricate details and textures of your colorful subject to make the colors even more mesmerizing. Fill the frame with vibrant hues, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the chromatic feast.
  • Adobe has an online color wheel tool that helps you figure out great color combinations. Try it out!
  • Post-processing magic: Don’t underestimate the power of post-processing! Enhance the vibrancy and saturation of colors using editing software but be careful not to go overboard. Strive for a natural and balanced look that accentuates the colors without sacrificing realism.

Challenge 2: “Macro Marvels”

Prepare to shrink yourself down to the size of an ant and witness the enchanting world of macro photography. In this challenge, we dive deep into the realm of tiny wonders, where a drop of water becomes an ocean and a blade of grass transforms into a majestic forest.

The Challenge: Macro photography is like stepping through Alice’s looking glass into a world where small objects become grand masterpieces. The goal is to turn small things into grand masterpieces.

Essential Tips

  • Get steady: Macro photography requires precision and stability. To avoid camera shake, use a tripod or find a stable surface to rest your camera on. This allows you to maintain sharp focus and capture intricate details without any blurring.
  • You’ll have to spend time researching the right lens or extension to help you capture macro photos. There are dedicated 1:1 macro lenses, but that might be out of your budget. There are also extension tubes made by a few companies that convert your existing lenses into macro lenses, and they’re not very expensive. Unfortunately Aliexpress –the best source for these tubes – is still banned, so you’ll have to see if there’s a cheap deal on Amazon. We’ve tried the Meike extension tubes for Sony and Canon, and they do a pretty good job.
  • Mind your lighting: Proper lighting is key to accentuating details and textures in macro photography. Use diffused natural light or experiment with artificial light sources, such as a ring light or a small softbox, to control the lighting and create the desired mood.
  • Patience is a virtue: Macro photography requires patience and attention to detail. Take your time to carefully compose your shots, adjusting angles and focal points to capture the essence of your subject. A steady hand and a dose of perseverance will yield stunning results.

Challenge 3: “Silhouette Stories”

Get ready to paint with shadows and weave tales in the absence of light. In this challenge, we’ll explore the captivating art of using silhouettes to tell visual stories that stir emotions and ignite the imagination. It’s time to embrace the power of darkness and let the outlines of your subject’s dance across a vivid backdrop.

The Challenge: Silhouettes possess a unique charm and an ability to evoke a sense of mystery and intrigue. Your task in this challenge is to harness the art of silhouettes to craft compelling visual narratives. By positioning your subject against a bright background and capturing their distinct shape.

Essential Tips

  • Simplify and focus: Silhouettes thrive on simplicity. Remove distracting elements from the frame, allowing the subject’s shape to take center stage. Keep the composition clean and uncluttered, ensuring the silhouette is the primary focal point.
  • Embrace negative space: Negative space—the empty area around your subject—is a powerful tool in silhouette photography. Utilize it to create balance, add depth, and evoke emotions. Allow the vastness of negative space to enhance the impact of your subject’s shape and story.
  • Seek recognizable shapes and emotions: Silhouettes are most impactful when the shape of the subject is easily recognizable. Look for distinctive outlines, such as a person striking a pose, a prominent landmark, or an iconic object. Infuse your silhouette with emotion, capturing gestures or expressions that tell a story without revealing the details.
  • Experiment with different angles: Don’t limit yourself to shooting silhouettes from a straightforward angle. Explore various perspectives, such as shooting from below to emphasize the height and grandeur of your subject or capturing silhouettes in profile to accentuate their unique features.

Challenge 4: “Motion Freeze”

Prepare to capture moments frozen in time, where energy and movement collide in a single frame. India especially, is the land of chaos. We never stop moving. We talk fast, we work fast and we surely don’t catch a break. Practice how to depict India in its restless glory!

The Challenge: Get ready to harness the power of speed and agility to capture stunning action shots that will leave viewers breathless.

  • Freezing motion in photography is like capturing lightning in a bottle. It allows you to preserve split-second moments, suspending movement in a single frame and revealing details that the human eye might miss. From athletes in action to wildlife in full stride, freezing motion enables you to create images that exude energy and excitement.
  • Fast shutter speeds: The foundation of freezing motion lies in using fast shutter speeds. By selecting a quick shutter speed, such as 1/1000th of a second or faster, you can capture the action with remarkable sharpness. This technique works exceptionally well when photographing fast-paced subjects like sports events or wildlife.
  • Panning: Panning involves tracking a moving subject with your camera while using a slower shutter speed. This technique allows you to create a sense of motion while keeping your subject relatively sharp. By following the movement with your camera, you can freeze the subject while blurring the background, resulting in a dynamic and energetic image.
  • Burst mode: Burst mode is a powerful tool for freezing motion, particularly in situations where the action is unpredictable or fast-paced. By using burst mode, your camera captures a series of rapid-fire shots, increasing the chances of capturing the perfect moment. This technique is especially useful in sports photography or any scenario where the timing of the action is critical.

Challenge 5: “Unexpected Perspectives”

Prepare to shatter the boundaries of traditional photography and venture into uncharted territory. In this challenge, we invite you to break free from the norm and discover the power of unexpected perspectives. By exploring unique angles, viewpoints, and unconventional camera positions, you’ll unlock a world of visual possibilities that will transform your compositions and elevate your storytelling.

The Challenge: Infuse your photography with a fresh perspective. Embrace innovative ideas and unexpected angles to serve a fresh photograph!

  • Overhead shots: Mount your camera on an extendable pole or use a drone to capture captivating overhead shots. This technique works particularly well for photographing crowds, architectural structures, or sprawling landscapes. It provides a unique perspective that can showcase patterns, symmetry, and the interconnectedness of the subject. Be careful though…cameras are simultaneously heavier and more delicate than we tend to think!
  • Up-close and personal: Get up close to your subject, filling the frame with intricate details that often go unnoticed. Explore macro photography or use a wide-angle lens to capture the subject in an intimate and immersive way. This approach invites viewers to examine the subject from a fresh perspective and discover the hidden beauty in the smallest of details.
  • Shooting through objects: Frame your subject by shooting through objects like fences, foliage, or architectural elements. This technique adds layers and depth to your composition, creating a sense of discovery and intrigue. Experiment with different apertures to achieve a balance between the foreground and the subject, allowing both to play a role in the visual narrative.

Challenge 6: “Nature’s Beauty”

Prepare to immerse yourself into nature’s wonders. In this challenge, we embark on a quest to capture the awe-inspiring beauty of the natural world through the lens of landscape and wildlife photography. From majestic mountain inapes to elusive creatures in their natural habitats, get ready to unveil the secrets of nature’s captivating allure.

The Challenge: Nature is an endless source of inspiration and beauty, offering boundless opportunities for breathtaking photography. Your challenge is to harness your skills and artistic vision to capture the essence of nature’s magnificence. Whether it’s the grandeur of sweeping landscapes or the delicate details of flora and fauna, you aim to create images that transport viewers into the heart of the natural world.

  • Rule of thirds: The rule of thirds is a classic composition guideline that can enhance the visual impact of your images. Divide your frame into a 3×3 grid, and position key elements of the scene along the gridlines or at their intersections. This technique adds balance, depth, and interest to your compositions.
  • Leading lines: Utilize natural elements, such as winding rivers, meandering paths, or jagged rock formations, as leading lines that guide the viewer’s eye through the frame. Leading lines create a sense of depth and draw attention to the focal points of your image, adding a dynamic element to your composition.
  • Golden hour: The golden hour, shortly after sunrise or before sunset, bathes the landscape in a warm, soft light that adds a magical touch to your images. Take advantage of this time of day to capture breathtaking colors, long shadows, and a sense of tranquility.
  • Diffused light: Overcast days or moments when the sun is partially obstructed by clouds provide diffused light that eliminates harsh shadows and creates even illumination. This soft light is ideal for capturing the intricate details of flowers, leaves, or wildlife.
